By Rodd Cayton, The Paper. — As the leaves fall from the trees, Sandoval County wants residents to consider another kind of dropping. As in dropping off food donations for neighbors in need. The county treasurer’s office is sponsoring its fifth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, benefitting the Nacimiento Community Foundation, through Nov. 13.
The food drive is for locals who need just a little help, according to a county news release. Treasurer Jennifer A. Taylor said county residents, employees, and businesses have come together in the spirit of generosity each year to help nourish the community. “We ask that you join with us again to share warmth and sustenance with families this holiday season,” Taylor said.
This year’s food drive has the support of the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce and its members. “Our Chamber and the (area’s) business leaders know that a thriving community is one where neighbors look out for one another,” Chamber President and CEO Jerry Schalow said. “Every contribution helps put food on a family’s table and reminds our Sandoval County neighbors that they are supported and valued.”
Taylor said the chamber partnership will expand both awareness of and contributions to the food collection effort.
The foundation operates the Checkerboard Food Pantry in Cuba, and the St. Felix Food Pantry in Rio Rancho. Nacimiento’s Peggy McCracken told The Paper. before the 2025 drive that the organization expected to distribute food to about 120 families. The food will be distributed via a drive-through process on Nov. 11 at the Checkerboard Food Pantry. Donations to St. Felix Food Pantry will be delivered by Nov. 18, the release states.
Residents are encouraged to gather nonperishable food items while grocery shopping and drop them off at the treasurer’s office, 1500 Idalia Road, Building. D in Bernalillo. Suggested food items include canned vegetables, beans, soups and fruits, along with rice, pasta, and holiday favorites. Anyone wishing to donate frozen turkeys may do so only on Nov. 16 before 10 a.m.
