Democratic Sheriff Jesse James Casaus’s endorsement of the Republican candidate for Sandoval County sheriff (Rio Rancho News, July 29) is not a surprising political pivot. It is the inevitable action of a man who openly mocks the values of the party to which he claims to belong. For too long, he has worn a Democratic label while harboring a profound contempt for Democratic principles and the people who hold them.
The sheriff’s true colors were on full display in a message he sent to the Democratic Party of Sandoval County in which he dismissed concerned citizens as “sheep” and asserted, “. . .my party affiliation is Democrat and I’m embarrassed by it.”
He went on to suggest that his critics need to “. . . add some masculinity in their life.”
Casaus’s endorsement reveals a stunning lack of integrity. While holding a position of public trust secured by running for sheriff as a Democrat, he privately views his own party as “embarrassing” and his constituents’ concerns as “virtue signaling.”
If you believe the Republican candidate for sheriff received a bipartisan endorsement, think again. Casaus’s endorsement is simply a public admission of what he has already told us in private: he does not share our values, he does not respect our perspectives, and he is not a Democrat in anything but name.
