The Corrales Village Council began its regular meeting on Feb. 13 by recognizing the Corrales Police Department Chief Victor Mangiacapra’s 21 years of service to the village.

“It is truly an honor to serve and absolutely a privilege to do so here,” Mangiacapra said. “I want to thank you for all of these years of support and I look forward to a few more, I don’t know if it will be quite as many as Officer Walter Heaton, but we’ll see how close we can get.”

Corrales Mayor James Fahey asked Mangiacapra about an arrest he had recently made, pertaining to the arrest of Charles Kauffmann, who allegedly shot and killed Elizabeth Barela at a Corrales residence on Jan. 22.

“I was just in the right place at the right time,” he said. “It was truly a team effort from the beginning.”

Meadowlark Lane trails project

During the meeting, Jeff Radford, former editor and publisher of the Corrales Comment and charter member of the Corrales Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, voiced his concerns about the 20-year delay of the Meadowlark Lane trails project.

“This Meadowlark Lane trails project has been waiting since 2004,” Radford said. “I am tired of waiting and I am sure there are a lot of other people. The village spent a fair amount of money hiring consultants and it was the most complete public participation process this village has ever gone through. There is a budget process coming up, so please take care of this and get this done.”

Fahey told Radford if Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham does not cut the village’s funds, the process will finally begin and he is hopeful the project will be finished by summer 2025.

  1. This project is completely unnecessary, for heaven’s sake, find somewhere else to ride a horse or bike. If you haven’t noticed, it’s a busy road and the residents on this lane already have enough to dodge. This project is so out of touch with reality.

  2. I think Corrales needs to meet with the folks that run the ditch and put in a round about Meadowlark and Loma Larga very busy intersection. Round about would have it flow smoother
