Sample Upcoming Events in Corrales and Placitas

The New Mexico Gourd Society will showcase a variety of decorative gourd art created by its members May 1 - 31 at the Corrales Community Library. According to their press release: "Gourds have been used for thousands of years as functional objects such as dishes, bowls, containers, and storage vessels. Over time, many cultures began embellishing gourds with materials, designs, and patterns, using techniques such as painting, weaving, beading, carving, burning, staining, etching, or inlay. Today, artists draw inspiration from these historical examples and continually develop new ideas to decorate gourds. Gourds come in a great variety of shapes and sizes, and lend themselves to a wide variety of artistic creations, many types of which will be displayed at the Corrales Library event.

Anne Hillerman will be speaking at Placitas Community Library on May 6. Anne has a special place in her heart for our little Library and with this title has been able to include us right up front in her book tour.

It is always exciting when Anne Hillerman offers one of her Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito books. As usual, signed copies of "The Way of the Bear" will be available for sale at Placitas community Library on April 25. You may call the library at (505) 867-3355 to reserve your prepaid copy.

Corrales Art Studio Tour (CAST) will delight us again on May 6-7, 10am-5pm. There is a reception at the Old San Ysidro Church on May 4 at 6pm. The public can catch a preview of their 25th annual studio and gallery tour on May 5, 1-4pm, also at the Church.  A complete map of all studios open to the public that weekend is available now at corralessocietyofartists.org/studio-tour/.

On May 13, the first annual ¡Viva Corrales! Will be presented as a celebration and showcase of the unique mix of cultural, artistic, and agricultural activities that make Corrales special. Sponsored by Corrales MainStreet and held at the beginning of the growing and festival seasons, it is a preview of the year’s activities.

“Visitors can get a taste of the many events offered during spring, summer and fall, as well as an introduction to the wide variety of organizations that make these things happen,” said Corrales MainStreet Executive Director Angela Gutierrez in a press release. “Numerous groups will hold demonstrations, shows, family-friendly activities and exhibits throughout the Village.”

Equestrian groups will stage demonstrations at TopForm Arena. There will be ceramics activities for the kids and a farm tour including Corrales’ agricultural history (transportation provided). The Corrales Historical Society’s Heritage Day theme will be “The History of the Horse in Corrales.”

Many local businesses will be open and participating with special promotions and demos.

“This day of fun is part of the process to attain our Arts and Cultural District Authorization through the State of New Mexico. We are required to create and host a signature event that represents our unique community, and we think you’ll find that this one does,” stated Gutierrez.

Come experience the spirit and personality of Corrales and get a preview of the year’s upcoming excitement. Stay tuned for a program guide and map, available at Corrales MainStreet’s office and other locations, and online at visitcorrales.com, Facebook and Instagram.
