On Friday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that the state will be sending out a new round of rebates totaling $673 million in mid-June.
The state Taxation and Revenue Department will send rebates of $500 to single filers and $1,000 to married taxpayers filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses. New Mexico residents who filed a 2021 Personal Income Tax return with the state and were not declared dependent will receive the rebate.
“Prices for basic necessities continue to be high across the nation,” said Lujan Grisham. “Our state today is in a fantastic financial position, and it’s important to me that New Mexico’s families are sharing in that success.”
In March, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that prices across the board had increased by 5% within the past year. Food saw the highest increase of 8.5%.
Those who received their tax refund by direct deposit in 2021, will also receive the rebate by direct deposit. All others will receive checks in the mail.
Taxpayers who qualify have until May 31, 2024, to file a 2021 New Mexico Personal Income Tax return and still qualify for the rebates.
New Mexicans who are not required to file income taxes because of their income level still have the option of applying for relief payments that the legislature approved $15 million for. Applications are not available yet, but the program will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Residents who have moved since filing their 2021 return can update their address using the state's Taxpayer Access Point.
