Wild Hearts Gallery in Placitas announced it will feature “Judith Roderick: The Butterfly” during the month of July with a reception scheduled for Saturday, July 15.
This series of hand-painted art quilts depicts the butterfly: A beautiful and elegant symbol of transformation; a numinous end product of metamorphosis, a fleeting moment in time, Phoenix from the ashes, winged being from the goo of a chrysalis and, before that, a creeping caterpillar, fragile, yet strong, containing a deep knowingness of where to go and what to do, incredibly delicate yet traveling great distances, with an inner compass. The butterfly is a timely symbol for humanity at this time on our planet. Which stage are we in? What might we possibly emerge into?
Roderick is a silk painter who also makes quilts which are shown locally and in national juried shows, often traveling from museum to museum for two or three years. She has been painting on silk for over thirty years, working in batik for twenty years before that. In 2008, she did her first quilt in 18 years after bringing home her Mother’s button collection. She looked at a silk banner she had hanging on the wall and said “that would look good quilted with buttons sewn on it”. It did and she has been making quilts ever since. She says it is the most exciting and satisfying art form she does now.
“For this show, I felt inspired to look at What’s Right, instead of What’s Wrong; to depict hope, beauty, opportunity and possibility. May my art be an inspiration and a blessing."
The reception will be celebrated with fellowship and refreshments on Saturday, July 15 from 1-4 p.m. at the gallery, 221 NM 165, Suite B in Placitas.
The gallery continues to follow COVID-19 safety recommendations in place at the time of the reception.
Wild Hearts Gallery is an artists’ collective, supported by 16 local artists. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can also take a visual tour of the gallery by visiting wildheartsgallery.com.
