Giddy Up! Historical Society's ¡Viva Corrales! Honors Horse Heritage

The Corrales Historical Society will celebrate horses on Saturday, May 13, with a "Heritage Day Roundup" as part of the inaugural ¡Viva Corrales! Celebration.

The event, done in conjunction with Casa San Ysidro museum's Heritage Day 2023, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic San Ysidro Church, 966 Old Church Road across from the museum, and is free of charge.

Heritage Day will feature folk artisans and live music, as well as opportunities to learn about Corrales' rich history, a news release from the museum states.

An art market will go on all day. Entertainment by the Acoma Enchanted Dancers will take place between 10 a.m. and noon. Then, Recycle Man, interactive music from recycled objects, will go on until 2 p.m. After that, Spanish guitarist Luis Campos will provide entertainment.

The historical society's theme for the event is “Heritage Day Roundup! Saddle up and celebrate the history of horses in Corrales,” according to a news release.

The celebration will include a photo exhibit featuring the history of horses in the town named for corrals. 

At 1 p.m., Doug Casteel, a longtime Corraleno, will tell stories about growing up with horses.

There will be children’s quizzes, craft activities and a name-the-horse contest.

Nancy Freshour will bring Aspen the horse, Corrales’ first pet mayor, to the event for people to meet from noon to 3:30 p.m. 

People will have the opportunity to visit the many attractions at Casa San Ysidro museum, across the street from the church.

Off site, the Corrales Horse and Mule People will stage live horse events and demonstrations throughout the day at Top Form Arena, 500 Jones Road.
