The Corrales Historical Society will present a lecture on the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a pivotal moment in New Mexico’s history.

Jon Ghahate, a Staff Educator at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, will lead the discussion at the Old Church on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.

According to a press release, Ghahate’s presentation, “Autonomy: the Core of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt,” will explore the leadership of Ohkay Owingeh leader Po’Pay, who orchestrated the revolt against Spanish rule. The talk will delve into the factors leading to the revolt, the role of inter-Pueblo communication, and the lasting impact of this historical event.

Ghahate, a New Mexico native with ties to the Pueblos of Laguna and Zuni, brings a unique perspective. His background as a cultural educator at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and his work at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center informs his expertise on Southwest ancestral civilizations and Pueblo cultures.

The event, co-sponsored by the Historical Society of New Mexico, aims to illuminate a crucial chapter in the state’s history and the ongoing fight for autonomy by Native American communities.
