National Wreaths Across America Day is coming to Corrales on Dec. 14 this year.

The national event is a day when volunteers place wreaths on the graves of veterans, active-duty military and their families.

San Ysidro Catholic Cemetery in Corrales will be participating in the event this year. At 11:30 a.m., a prayer will be said for all the veterans who are buried at the cemetery. Corrales Mayor Jim Fahey will speak at the event and families of those veterans will be given a wreath to place on their grave.

The day is part of a year-long mission by the nonprofit organization Wreaths Across America to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach the value of freedom to the next generation.

The tradition of placing wreaths on gravesites began when a wreath company overran their supply and took the wreaths to Arlington Cemetery. The iconic image of snow-covered wreaths on the gravestones in 2005 inspired the creation of Wreaths Across America in 2007.

On Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers place wreaths on gravesites and say the names of the service members out loud. The event takes place in more than 3,000 local communities.
