The Village of Corrales invites landowners interested in protecting their farmland or open space to participate in a conservation program.
In November, Corraleños approved a general obligation bond authorizing the village administration to secure $2 million in funding for the protection of farmland and open space conservation easements.
The farmland preservation program works to ensure that land remains accessible to wildlife, allows farmers to continue cultivating fields and helps preserve Corrales’ agricultural heritage and open spaces for future generations. This enables the village to purchase conservation easements that can be farmed or maintained as open space while ensuring the property remains undeveloped.
Under the easement agreements, landowners retain ownership of their property but agree not to build, subdivide or sell water rights. As noted in a Comment report, the approach allows for the ongoing use of the land while safeguarding its agricultural and ecological value for years to come.
Corrales landowners interested in the farmland preservation program can contact village administration at 505-897-0502, ext. 208.
