Letter to the Editor: Voting can stop gun violence epidemic
There have been far too many devastating shootings since Sandy Hook. Our country’s children and adults deserve real action to stop the epidemic of gun violence. Every person in the USA should be able to live without fear of being murdered or wounded while going to school, church, theaters, grocery stores and concerts etc. Between 2013 and 2022, the firearm death rate in NM increased by 76% and its firearm homicide rate more than doubled. New Mexico’s rank for firearm deaths per capita increased from 10th highest to 3rd highest state in the U.S. (According to the Everystat)
It is time to DO SOMETHING: Vote for candidates who support gun violence prevention. Contact your Federal and State Senators and Representatives. Ask them to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, require safe storage of firearms and eliminate gun manufacturer’s immunity from liability. Remind them we need sensible background checks, gun safety laws and programs. Â
MOMS DEMAND ACTION advocates for prevention of gun violence and could be contacted for resources and support. Their website is https://momsdemandaction.org Let’s work together to prevent tragedies before they happen. By learning to recognize the signs of potential danger, we can intervene early and save lives. Let’s create safer communities and schools for everyone
