It’s that time of year again when residents face the toughest decision of the season and fulfill their civic duty: voting for the Corrales pet mayor.

With voting underway at local businesses and online, nine eager candidates are ready to paw their way onto your ballot in hopes of becoming the next pet mayor. The winner will be announced during the Corrales Harvest Fest on Sept. 29.

Every vote counts, as all proceeds directly benefit Corrales Animal Services. According to Tracy Stabenow, pet mayor election coordinator, last year’s event raised $4,400, the highest amount ever collected.

This year’s lineup of hopeful furry friends includes six dogs — Marley, Armadillo, Mae, Ted, Shelby and Benson — a miniature pony named Chico Suave, a goat named Cheddar and a returning candidate, the determined guinea pig George, from last year’s race.

Each candidate is vying for votes with a unique slogan. Marley’s is, “I’m an old dog who may not know a trick, but if you vote for me, you’ll make a great pick!” while Cheddar says, “Cheddar days are coming!”

People can view the slogans and vote for their favorite candidate at corralesharvestfestival.com or at one of several local businesses with ballot boxes. Each vote costs $1 and people can vote as many times as they want.

Votes can be cast in person at The Village Mercantile, Frontier Mart, Village Pizza, The Sandia Bar, Perea’s Tijuana Bar, Casa Vieja and every Sunday at the Growers’ Market until the cutoff on Sept. 22.
