Village councilors discussed proposed changes regarding the village’s lighting code at the Aug. 27 council meeting.

The changes would require Planning and Zoning Administrator Laurie Stout or Code Enforcement Officer Sherrie Rice to notify property owners in writing if their light fixtures are found to violate the code.

According to Rice, the proposed amendment would require homeowners and businesses to install light fixtures that comply with village code when they replace existing fixtures or shields.

The village’s lighting code was designed “to reduce or prevent light pollution to maximize the preservation of the agricultural and rural heritage of the Village.”  Compliant outdoor light fixtures, including security lighting, should have hoods or shields to keep lighting “from creating nuisance glare or light trespass.”

Complaints about specific lights have led the village to work toward updating the code. Rice said the amendment would enable her to act and file a report only when a violation is confirmed, rather than issuing notices based solely on complaints.

The discussion of the proposed changes is the first step in amending the ordinance.
