Mosquito spraying season is underway in the village and continues through mid-September.

Every year, Sandoval County and Bernalillo County vector control technicians fog in the village during spraying season. Sandoval County sets the dates and times of the spraying.

According to Mayor Jim Fahey, the entire village is sprayed, with exceptions given to residents who do not want vector control and who have “no spraying” signs that are visible for the technicians to see.

West Nile Virus

On Aug. 6, the state confirmed a West Nile virus infection in a resident of Union County. The person was not hospitalized and is currently recovering at home.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, in 2023, New Mexico had the third-highest number of human infections of West Nile virus reported in the state since tracking began in 2002. That year, there were 80 infections and eight deaths. Over the last five years, the state has averaged approximately 35 cases per year of West Nile virus.
