After an investment of $4.2 million over four years, Corrales got its shiny new gym in May. Now village leaders are working to come up with a plan for the old gym.
Constructed in 1988, it was designed with half a basketball court and a much smaller exercise space indoors. Right now, the space is being used for community meetings and events.
Mayor Jim Fahey said the village doesn’t plan to build onto the old gym but is instead looking to repurpose the space into more of a community center gym run by the village.
“We’d like to have an area for classes and to work out,†he said. “We don’t have firm plans yet, it’s just conceptual and we don’t have money to open it or a person to run it yet.â€
Earlier this year, the Legislature gave the village $80,000 for gym equipment in the old gym. The village also received donations of equipment from Intel, some of which was repurposed for the old gym.Â
Fahey said there’s no definitive timeline, and he’d like to see more community input before making any concrete decisions. And most importantly, the village would need to have a concrete plan and funding for the project.
