Wendell the Nigerian goat may soon have to relinquish his seat.
Wendell is the current Corrales Pet Mayor, elected last year as part of a beloved village tradition. The election for the village’s pet mayor began over a decade ago when a local woman traveling saw a pet mayor contest abroad. She brought the idea back to Corrales. The pet mayor election is now a tradition and part of the Corrales Harvest Festival, both put on by the Kiwanis Club of Corrales.
Applications for the 2024 pet mayor nominees are now open, and Wendell is asking all Corrales pets to consider running in the prestigious election.
“If your llama, hedgehog, goat, dog, horse, or whatever, has what it takes to be Corrales’ next Pet Mayor, please apply,†said Tracy Stabenow, who helps organize the pet election.
Last year, six candidates ran for the seat, and it was a tight race until Wendell pulled ahead.
The application is free per pet nominee. To apply, visit the Corrales Harvest Festival’s website, corralesharvestfestival.com/2024-pet-mayoral-election/. Applications can also be emailed to tracy.stabenow@gmail.com, or mailed to Pet Mayor Election, 4 Acoma Trl., Corrales, NM, 87048.
Voting opens July 1 and continues through September. Votes are $1 each and voters are encouraged to vote as many times as they like.
All money raised from the election benefits the Corrales Animal Services organization.
