A lightning strike was identified as the reason the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD) pumps went down at Siphon Beach.
On Friday, April 5, the MRGCD identified that the electrical components of both the pumps at Siphon Beach were damaged due to a lightning strike, according to an MRGCD press release.
An updated press release on Friday, April 12 stated that both pumps at Siphon Beach were back online. Repair work was carried out by MRGCD’s electrical contractor.
A new pump was installed on the north pump due to damage caused by the electrical converters, pump shafts, and bearings. While the south pump’s bearings sustained damage, they did not require replacement. Water deliveries to affected irrigators will resume based on available supply.
