In a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 2, Mayor James Fahey and the village council unveiled the village’s impressive new gymnasium at the Parks and Recreation Facility at 500 Jones Road.

The event was full of Corraleños who wanted to get a look at the gym and enjoy free food and a live band.

After an investment of $4.2 million over four years, the new gym will replace the existing gym, which was constructed in 1988 and was only designed with half a basketball court.

“We can do so many different things here that we weren’t able to do in the other gym,” said Lynn Siverts, parks and recreation director for the Village of Corrales.

The new gymnasium will be the gem of the village’s recreation center, boasting 11,000 square feet. It includes an 8,352 square-foot gym floor and bathrooms and changing rooms that are just under 3,000 square feet.

The gym will add to the village’s recreational facility which already includes a skate park, tennis courts, outdoor basketball and pickleball courts, sand volleyball and bocce ball courts, among others.

According to Fahey, the plan for the old gym is to convert it into a weight room, workout area and classrooms.

The new gym will have enough room for full-court basketball, volleyball and pickleball.

“Our basketball leagues are gonna really appreciate it,” said Siverts.

The gym access fee is only $1, is available on a first-come-first-served basis and may vary based on activities taking place.

Siverts said the building will be available to rent for parties or events. However, the rental fee is yet to be determined as the Parks and Recreation Department needs to evaluate the maintenance cost of the building. The evaluation will determine the hourly charge for renting the building.

Like the village pool, not everyone was on board during the planning phase.

To make gym reservation requests, the village requires 24 hours before reservations are needed.
