After a person carrying a holstered pistol showed up at the Corrales Fathers’ Day concert, the Village Council will consider outlawing the carrying of firearms in municipal facilities.

“We had a private citizen there at the west end of the Wells Fargo parking lot at the entrance to La Entrada Park who was exercising his right to ask for signatures on a nominating petition for a candidate for the senate. He was also exercising his right to bear arms, and had a large firearm strapped on his hip,” Harper explained.
“Just as a couple of citizens approached me and asked whether there was anything we could do about that, Chief Vigil appeared and convinced the bearer of arms that while it might be his right, it was not a particularly appropriate thing to do at a family setting.
“We could have people at the event who were really worried, and it occurred to me that others might react to that inappropriately too. But in that exchange, the person mentioned that there are no signs indicating that firearms are not allowed in parks in Corrales, and that apparently the City of Albuquerque has posted signs saying ‘No Firearms Allowed.’
“I think it would be a good idea for the Village of Corrales to post such signs in Village parks and other Village venues.”
Village Attorney John Appel suggested that before posting signs, the council ought to pass an ordinance or resolution disallowing firearms in public places.
“I’d like to see that happen,” Harper suggested.
Councillor John Alsobrook added, “Is it possible to include that for all municipal buildings?”
